In short

  • 39 crypto CFDs against the US dollar, on every CFD plan; the list in your MT5 terminal is the one that applies.
  • Commission is 0.06% of the trade value round turn on Edge and Instant and 0.045% on Prime, half at the open and half at the close.
  • No weekend exception for crypto: without the add-on, positions are closed at 4:45 PM New York on Friday, the first time a warning, the second a closed account.
  • Size in coins from the stop. Bitcoin's range means smaller positions than forex habits suggest.

At WhitePips, bitcoin, Ethereum and 37 other coins trade as CFDs against the US dollar on MetaTrader 5, on every CFD plan. Commission is a share of the trade value, 0.06% round turn on Edge and Instant and 0.045% on Prime, so a $50,000 bitcoin position costs about $30 to open and close on Edge. The same loss limits apply as on any other symbol, and crypto gets no exception from the Friday 4:45 PM New York close on accounts without the Weekend Holding add-on.

A CFD settles the difference in price between opening and closing. You never hold the coin, and there is no wallet, custody or transfer at any point. Being paid out in crypto is a different subject, covered in crypto payouts from a prop firm.

Which cryptocurrencies can you trade?

The symbols page lists 39 crypto CFDs, all quoted against the US dollar. They include:

  • The largest coins: BTCUSD (bitcoin), ETHUSD (Ethereum), SOLUSD (Solana), XRPUSD, BNBUSD, ADAUSD (Cardano) and LTCUSD (Litecoin).
  • Others under shortened names: DOGUSD for Dogecoin, AVXUSD for Avalanche, DOTUSD for Polkadot, LNKUSD for Chainlink, MTCUSD for Polygon and SHBUSD for Shiba Inu, among others.
  • Smaller and newer tokens, down to meme coins such as TRPUSD (Official Trump) and MELUSD (Melania Meme).

The list in your MT5 terminal is the one that applies, and it can change with market conditions. Every CFD plan reaches the same symbols. The futures line lists no crypto contracts, so crypto is a CFD-only market at WhitePips.

How is crypto commission calculated?

Forex, metals and energies are charged a fixed amount per lot. Crypto is charged as a percentage of the trade value instead, because one coin can be worth tens of thousands of dollars and another a fraction of a cent.

  • Edge and Instant: 0.06% of the trade value, round turn.
  • Prime: 0.045% of the trade value, round turn.

Round turn means the whole charge for opening and closing. The platform takes half when the trade opens, on the value at the open, and half when it closes, on the value at the close. It is the same in the evaluation and once funded, and it is part of each trade's result, so it counts toward the profit target and the loss limits like any other cost.

Worked example. Say bitcoin is at $60,000 and you buy 0.5 BTC on a $100K Edge 1 Step. The trade value is $30,000.

  • Opening charge: 0.03% of $30,000 is $9.00.
  • Close at $61,200 and the closing value is $30,600; the charge is 0.03% of that, $9.18. Total commission $18.18, and a gross result of +$600 becomes +$581.82 before the spread.
  • Close at $58,800 instead and the closing value is $29,400; the charge is $8.82. Total commission $17.82, and a gross result of −$600 becomes −$617.82.
  • On Prime the charge is 0.0225% at each end: $6.75 to open and about $6.89 to close at $61,200, roughly $13.64 in all.

Against $600 of risk, $18 is 3%. That matters little on one trade and a great deal to a method that trades often for small targets. A scalp aiming for 0.2% on bitcoin gives up 0.06% of it, nearly a third, before the spread is counted. Commission is charged whether the trade wins or loses.

Can you hold crypto positions over the weekend?

The crypto market itself trades around the clock, seven days a week. The WhitePips weekend rule makes no exception for it. On a CFD account without the Weekend Holding add-on, every position still open at 4:45 PM New York time on Friday is closed by the system at the market price, crypto included. The trading rules add that a position opened after that deadline and before the market reopens is closed in the same way. The first weekend this happens is a formal warning and the account trades on; the second weekend it happens, the account is closed.

With the add-on, chosen when you buy the account, nothing is closed and positions stay open through the weekend. Whether a crypto symbol quotes at the weekend on the server depends on its trading hours, which are set on the platform; you can see them in the symbol's specification in MT5. Either way, a position held from Friday to Monday is exposed to whatever the price does while you are away, and the loss limits count the result. The post on weekend holding and swaps covers the add-on in full.

Overnight holding on weekdays is allowed on every CFD plan. A position held through the daily rollover may be charged a swap at the rate set on the platform, unless the account has the Swap-Free add-on.

How volatile is bitcoin compared with forex?

Far more than the other symbols on the account. Bitcoin can move several percent in a day, and smaller coins can move further still. On EURUSD, 1% is a big day. That gap, not the chart pattern, is what decides position size.

Spreads on crypto CFDs can also widen when the market is thin, and the smaller the coin, the thinner it tends to be. A stop placed close to the price is more likely to be filled further away on a fast move, so the loss on a stopped trade can be larger than planned.

How do you size a bitcoin trade against the loss limits?

Work in coins and dollars, not lots. How many coins one lot represents depends on the symbol's contract size, which differs between brokers, so check the symbol's specification in MT5 before converting coins into lots.

Coins = dollars at risk divided by the stop distance in dollars per coin.

On a $100K Edge 1 Step the Max Daily Loss is $4,000 and the Max Loss is $7,500, static. With bitcoin at $60,000:

  • Risk $1,000 with a 2% stop, $1,200 per coin: 1,000 divided by 1,200 is about 0.83 BTC, a $50,000 position.
  • Risk $1,000 with a 4% stop, $2,400 per coin: about 0.42 BTC, a $25,000 position.
  • Risk $500 with a 4% stop: about 0.21 BTC, a $12,500 position.

A wider stop means a smaller position for the same risk. Because bitcoin moves further than forex, a stop placed outside its ordinary noise is usually wider in percentage terms, and the position has to shrink to match. Commission on the first example is about $30, 3% of the risk. At 1% a trade, four full losses in one day reach the daily limit, and eight spread over several days, with nothing won in between, go past the Max Loss.

Three more rules touch crypto sizing:

  • Max. Exposure: the combined notional value of every open position may not exceed the plan's cap, $1,250,000 on a $100K account. A position sized from its stop will rarely come near it.
  • Max Floating Loss per Trade: once funded, one open trade may run against you by up to 2% of the starting balance, $2,000 on $100K, or 1.5% on Instant. A first breach is a warning that resets the profit of an account in profit; a second closes the account.
  • Max Floating Loss per Symbol, Instant Pro and Instant Go: all open positions on one symbol together may not float below 1.5% of the starting balance, $1,500 on $100K. 1% sends a notice, the first 1.5% breach is a formal warning, and each one after that is a strike. Splitting one bitcoin idea into several positions does not avoid it.

Questions traders ask

Is crypto commission free on a funded account? No. Crypto is charged 0.06% of the trade value round turn on Edge and Instant and 0.045% on Prime, in the evaluation and once funded. Indices and stocks are the commission-free markets.

Does the scalping rule apply to crypto? Yes, as it does to every symbol. On a funded CFD account a trade held under 120 seconds counts as a scalp, and from 10 closed trades, scalps may carry at most 20% of the profit. While the share is over that, payouts on that account are paused; it never ends the account, and once profit from longer trades brings the share back down, payouts open again by themselves.

Can I run an expert advisor on crypto? Expert advisors are allowed on every CFD plan when you genuinely developed, own and control them and can show them running. Bought, rented, subscription or mass-market bots are not allowed on any plan, whatever they trade.

Crypto CFDs are leveraged and can lose money fast. WhitePips accounts are simulated, and payouts are real money paid on the simulated results under the plan's rules, all of which are listed on the CFD plans page.
